Is Rooney Worth £300,000 A Week?

The English public looks on in shock, shame even in disgust as Rooney's mega busting new deal was announced last week. The 3 lion’s striker will pocket a £300,000 week salary, which has caused some concern from pundits, football fans and the UK general public alike. Is he worth £300,000 a week? Does he play as a player that deserves to get that salary? And the million dollar question is why did United give him such a massive deal after his childish shenanigans in the summer?

In my opinion "yes" and "no."  Yes because Rooney is one of the top players in the United side who is one of the few shining lights in their abysmal season this year, who is one of the best striker in world football and when he decides "to turn up" he's a work horse who plays with his heart on his sleeve. Why shouldn't Rooney be a top earner with the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Bale. He's a world class talent even though his form through his career and the international stage has been stagnating. He deserves it, ever since he's made his bow with that goal against Arsenal and that sensational debut for United where he scored a hat-trick and destroyed Fenerbache he's proven to the world that's he's a class act. On the other hand I believe that he doesn't deserve the deal. His immature and attention seeking antics to move away from Old Trafford for the 2nd time in two years shouldn’t warrant any player with any enormous new contract. What if in the summer or years on Rooney pulls on the same stunt? Why should a player who wants to throw all their toys out of the pram get such a privilege? I also think that he didn't deserve this deal as his form in the last 3 years has been too up and down and not constant like Messi or Ronaldo's form.

This deal just goes to show and highlight that there are darker days in football as player power gets stronger and stronger and managers and chairmen no longer have the strong authority that they did 20 years ago. Sir Alex Ferguson has banged on about this for years. And now it's become more apparent that players like Rooney can get away with murder and be rewarded with mega deals. Players will follow the examples of Jean Marc Bosman and want to play the role of God and think they own the place. If this carry on then there's no hope for football. And one last food for thought If Fergie was still at United do you think Rooney would get that deal?
